Electricity

The voltage used throughout Japan is uniformly 100 volts, A.C. There are two kinds of frequencies in use—50 Hertz in eastern Japan (including Tokyo and Yokohama) and 60 Hertz in western Japan (including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka). Except certain types of electrical appliances, a step-down transformer is required to convert the voltage.

Currency

Major international card brands are generally accepted throughout the country. In some cases, it is useful to have cash with you as well, as you may need it. Bank ATMs have limited operating hours, but many convenience store (corner store) ATMs often operate 24 hours a day. Tipping is not required in Japan.
